. Reptiles
as Pets
Raising a pet
lizard is increasingly commonplace. Care of any type of lizard is
specialized, but for a starter pet, nothing beats a leopard gecko
or a bearded dragon. Both are relatively hardy, good eaters and,
if given the correct care, long-lived. However, many potential owners
still wonder if lizards make good pets and, if so, how they should
go about selecting one that is appropriate and what they will need
to care for it.
Large turtles
can easily outlive humans, but even the more manageable red-eared
slider--the most popular pet turtle in the world--can live for decades
in captivity. Before starting out, owners should take their time
and gather as much information as possible, so they can provide
for their pets to the best of their ability.
Salmonella
bacteria can lead to salmonellosis, a disease in reptiles that can
be contracted by humans, causing serious gastrointestinal suffering.
However, by following a few basic hygiene rules, the risk of this
disease in either a pet reptile or its owner can be minimized. This
should be discussed in detail with your veterinarian before you
buy your pet reptile.
